  1. I am sort of disappointed. I’ve tried 2 sites trying to find out where to send my 2 scarves, and no reply from either one. For AL, the deadline is Jan. 20, 2012. I only found out about the scarf project in Dec. I know 2 isn’t very many, but it is what I have done, and I would like to send them before the deadline.passes. Please advise!

    • Linda – all of the details are on our website at http://www.scarvesforspecialolympics.org – simply choose the state you wish to support on the drop down menu and click Get More Info – all delivery details are there.

If you have any other questions, please let me know. This link is regularly posted on Facebook and also here on our blog on the How to Get Involved page.

      • Thanks for steering me in the right direction! I did get the correct address, sent the scarves off, and received a very nice letter of acknowledgement. Thank you for all your effort in these very special people’s behalf. And please let me know ASAP when decisions are made regarding the 2013 scarves. I want to be able to take part in that effort with many more scarves, and I have several people who will probably be interested as well.

  2. I love to crochet and have completed 3 scarves which I am sending to Colorado. When I saw the numbers needed in some of the other states with deadlines further out I have decided to go and get more yarn and see how many more I can complete and get sent out. However, I did have to order the yarn for the first ones. Hopefully I will be able to get the colors local this time to allow me more time to crochet.

    • I found the #886 blue at Walmart when I couldn’t find it at Joann’s or Michaels. The # 512 turqua was available at all 3. Good luck!

  3. I have 5 scarves made ,working on more

  4. Remember the deadline for mailing scarfs in California is 2/25/11 so keep on knitting/crocheting!!

  5. for you folks in states with deadlines that have past, keep knitting/crocheting and send to California. Our deadline is 2/25/11. Plenty of time for more scarfs to be done!!. Also I have used size 13 knitting needles with 19 stitches, looks good and goes fast. I used the trinity stitch, k3,p3 across, next row k3,p3 so its not ribbing but garter stitch. and changed colors every 5 inches or 10 inches. goes fast looks good. If using double strand and 15 how many stitches works for 6 inches? I think I’ll try that next. I find its not so tedious if I change patterns.

  6. I can’t wait to hear more about this.
Because of health reason’s there isn’t much
I can volunteer for, so this would work great for me.

  7. I just found out about this Special Olympics scarf project right after Christmas and the scarves were to be mailed by January 19th. I did complete 2 in that time, but if I know about it earlier next year, I should be able to contribute more.

  8. I’ve got 7 scarves already done, working on two more and will be sending them out by the end of the week. I did this the last time they asked for these and made 10 then. I love working on this and trying to get others in my neighborhood to do this also.

  9. Hi,
I was wondering if I could deliver my scarves to the Minnesota Special Olympics office instead of mailing them. My husband works about a mile from their office and so it seems silly to me to mail them when we are so close. Thanks!

  10. Ive been telling everyone I know since I found out at Christmas time. We recently adopted a little girl with Down Syndrome and I am thrilled to be a part of something so beautiful……

  11. I’ve been crocheting for about an year (self taught) and I just found out about this scarf project two days ago. Now, almost done with my first scarf. So exciting to be able to make something I love to do and give it to others!!

  12. I heard about this oppurtunity from My husband who
works for the fish and game in Boise Idaho, I have completed 2 in two days and it takes a skein of each with some left over and I also am making some on the looms that I have which turn out very nice and you can use double yarn on them also…I am proud to be a part of this cause, what special spirits are at the special olympics……

  13. Our group is trying to crochet pattern LW2360, but we are having a problem following the pattern after 36 rows of A color, please help us understand what to do until the end.

    • Thank you for your recent inquiry about LW 2360 Special Olympics Striped Crochet Scarf.

The pattern should be worked as follows:

You’ll start out with a total of 8 rows of A (In the pattern, you work Row 1 and 2, then repeat for 6 more rows for a total of 8 rows).
      Then:

      8 rows B
      8 rows A
      16 rows B
      8 rows A
      8 rows B
      36 rows A
      8 rows B
      8 rows A
      16 rows B
      8 rows A
      8 rows B
      36 rows A
      8 rows B
      8 rows A
      16 rows B
      8 rows A
      8 rows B
      8 rows A

      Fasten off

You may find it helpful to write down the row sequence and check each one off as it’s completed. Please let us know if we can help further.

      Have a great day!

  14. Hi Everyone! Just wanted to let you know that I have gotten two of these crocheted rib scarves out of 1 skein each of blue and turqua, with a little bit left over.
“LW2368 Special Olympics Rib Crochet Striped Scarf”
This scarf works up quickly and looks wonderful with these colors.
My original goal was 2 scarves, but with two whole skeins untouched and some leftovers, it looks like I may get 5 done.
Looking forward to seeing the list of state programs!

    • wish I crocheted for the fastness of it but love knitting but takes me at least 6 hours maybe less to complete a scarf.
I don’t like the looks of anything above a 10 needle will order from knitpicks a size 15 and try to knit with both colors. Someone who did this last year suggested this to me.

      • Hi Peggy! I love knitting, too. :) I’m sure a scarf knitted with 2 strands on big needles would be wonderful and warm, and much appreciated.

But have you considered a drop stitch or openwork pattern?
Or maybe you would like Cottage Creations’ “More Projects for the Community” which has a garter stitch sports scarf which is a lot of fun to knit on a circular needle (plus a bunch more nice charity patterns).

This isn’t a race and it makes it extra nice to participate when we enjoy what we’re doing. For me, doing miles of half double crochet is pleasant and relaxing, plus I can take it everywhere and work on it during the day as time allows. Please don’t read anything into my comment on “quickness”. Have fun and enjoy! :)

      • I knit with both colors in a ribbing pattern (K2,P2) and love the look. I used size 13 needles and cast on 26 stiches. I’ve completed 6 scarves in a very short time and think the scarves look great.

  15. Hi – Sorry if this has already been answered. What are the size requirements? I couldn’t find them on this blog. Thanks so much!

  16. I live in a smallish town (15,000). Walmart is the only place here to buy yarn. I checked today and they had both colors. $2.23 per skein. Great. Now, I don’t have to drive 40 miles round trip for the yarn. I wish I had known about this last year.

  17. I just found out about this a few days ago. I’m so exited about it. My late brother participated in SO in the 80′s. I’ll make some in his memory. If I add fringe (is that ok?) do I count the length of the fringe in the measurements? I’m on vaction for 10 days and will try to find the yarn today. Can’t wait for next week when the info page is up.

  18. How do we find out what states are particiaping other than waiting for the website to launch

    • Pam,
The website will be launching in just 12-13 days – and all participating Special Olympics Programs will be posted and announced then, with their deadlines and delivery details.
      Thank you!

  19. Can I choose my own pattern for the Special Olympics
    Project?
    Carol

  20. Must I choose a scarf pattern from the project or may
I choose my own pattern using Blue and Turqua colors. I have knitted many scarves and have a pattern
    I enjoy knitting.
    Thanks for your response.
